Displaying The Categories On The Arthemia Index Page

Awhile ago I wrote up a post about how to setup the Arthemia index page to properly display posts. I was just contacted through email by a person that was having trouble getting the categories to show up on the home page. The default setup has spaces for 5 categories to be shown but she could only get 2 to show.

I took a quick look at the default code for Arthemia and sent her an email telling her how to set things up the correct way. A few minutes later after sending I got an email back thanking me for my help. I figured there may be others out there having this same issue so I decided to turn it into a post.

Editing index.php to display the categories

Open up the index.php file inside the Arthemia folder and scroll down until you see the following line of code…

This line sets the DIV for the category listings on the home page. Scan a few lines down to find the piece of code we are going to modify as shown below…

Without going into too much detail the numbers inside of the parenthesis are the category IDs. So in order to display the correct categories you need to input the category IDs of the categories that you want to show on the home page.

Finding the ID of a category is relatively easy as all that it requires is navigating to the listings of categories in your WordPress Dashboard and hovering over the category title. As your mouse is hovering over the title, look down in the status bar of your browser and make note of the number at the very end of the URL as this is the ID of the category.

Do this for each category that you want to show on the home page (remember, Arthemia is set to only show 5) and write down the IDs. Once you have done that, go back into the Theme Editor and back into index.php. Find the following line of code…

Then, replace the numbers inside of the parenthesis with the ones that you wrote down for the category IDs and separate each number by a comma. Once you have done that, just save the file and you will all set!

If you still aren’t too sure on what to do, I’ll provide an example for you.

Lets say that you wrote down the 5 category IDs of the categories that you would like to display on the home page. Those 5 category IDs ended up being 34, 95, 102, 73, 14. So, modifying the code as I explained in the post you would end up with the code looking like the following…

That is all there is to it. Update the file and refresh the home page and you should see the appropriate categories and their descriptions (if you provided any) displaying on the home page.
